Background
The summer of '66 was a good year for Della Reese. The celebrated jazz
diva had a string of albums to her name, her exuberant vocal talents were
in constant demand in venues and clubs all over the US, and she had just
bought a luxury house in the Hollywood Hills. Among her many engagements,
one booking at the Playboy Penthouse just down the road was a night not
to be forgotten. In amongst the luxurious padded booths occupied by movie
moguls, starlets and Playboy bunnies was recording equipment that would
capture the magic of that unforgettable night with one of the most wildly
provocative pieces ever recorded. Della would accompany Bobby Bryant's
jazz combo with ad-libs and shocking stories in her own inimitable, outrageous
way, and would deliver Ervin Drake's 'Very Good Year' in flamboyant style.
Here we have that very song, live as it was heard that very night, and
in studio form as it was released a few months earlier. In over 40 years
nothing has changed, the music provided by the good-humoured songstress
is here once more to provoke, to astonish, to enjoy!
